Dear British Italian Society fellow member, after reading an article in our magazine, Rivista, about the Via Francigena, I have been toying with the idea of walking it. To this end I am planning to take 90-100 days starting in July to walk the 1800kms of the ancient pilgrims' route, Canterbury to the Vatican. I am probably starting in London but not yet firmed that part up yet.

I am writing to you today to ask for your help. I would love to hear from anyone out there who has walked all or part of the route. I am keen to learn what you found useful to take with you. Where you stayed. How easy it was finding food and water, etc.

I am aiming to raise £10,000 for Hostage UK. A unique charity, which I co-founded with Terry Waite CBE, some 15 years ago. My solo attempt at this very long walk will take around 3 months and all the funds I raise via my JustGiving page will go to Hostage UK.

Walking on one's own for 3 months may sound a lonely activity but I relish the chance to think about life without the usual interruptions. In particular, about my late parents, both of whom were originally from Italy. I've been back many times but never on foot!

I look forward to hear from you

Carlo
