Apr 12, 2018 News, Notices for Members

We were all deeply saddened by the news that Charles de Chassiron, our Chairman from 2005 to 2015, had passed away on Thursday 5 April 2018. Charles had been in poor health for the past three years; but he, and Britt-Marie, bore their suffering with enormous courage.

I am sure that, like me, all our members will remember Charles as a man of great dignity, sincerity and kindness. He had a deep interest in, and love of, Italy and Italian history and culture. The BIS played a huge part in Charles’ life after his retirement from the Diplomatic Service.

Charles’ funeral took take place at St Martin of Tours Church, Epsom on 30 April 2018. On that occasion, Charles friend Avi Shlaim, delivered a moving tribute. The Guardian published a summary of that tribute in its obituary of Charles:        https://www.theguardian.com/politics/2018/may/02/charles-de-chassiron-obituary

The Trustees of the British-Italian Society have decided that the Society's annual June lecture, which follows its annual AGM, will in future be known as The Charles de Chassiron Memorial Lecture to recognise Charles' enormous contribution to the British-Italian Society over many years.
