Leconfield Lecture
|
The Society was extremely fortunate that David Willey the BBC correspondent
in Rome agreed to give this year's Leconfield Lecture.
His title was 'Justice, Italian Style'.
Critics of Silvio Berlusconi allege that his government has manipulated
justice by passing laws - such as the decriminalisation of accounting
fraud -, which benefit him. They accuse him of running Italy rather
as if it were one of his commercial companies, confusing his public
and private roles, and publicly criticising the judiciary, posing
as a victim of the system. It is against the background of these
polemics that Mr Willey would like to examine the current state
of justice in Italy.
David Willey was honorary visiting Professor at the School of Law
at Warwick University from 1996-2001, as his law tutor at Cambridge
was the founder of that Law School and he found it useful to have
some occasional input on other systems of justice. In the course
of his work as BBC correspondent he has followed many criminal trials
in Italy relating to the Mafia, Terrorism, and other serious crimes.
